our story

Based in Amsterdam, kōdō started from a deep fascination for Japan, its culture, and the rituals surrounding tea. Our mission is to create something of true value, celebrating craftsmanship, tradition, and mindful living.

Spending time in nature, with its calming colors, scents, and rhythms, has deeply influenced our vision. It was during these moments that the idea for kōdō, “the art of smell”, was born. Inspired by the subtle aromas in the air that evoke calm and presence. The same philosophy applies to our matcha, where the delicate aromas released while whisking enhance the sensory experience and mindfulness of every cup.

Inspired by Buddhist monks

Our journey was first sparked by the story of Buddhist monks, who centuries ago drank matcha to support long hours of meditation and reflection. These monks valued mindfulness, focus, and presence, using tea as a way to slow down, cultivate patience, and honor the moment, a strong contrast to the fast-paced modern life. For them, it was not only about drinking the tea, but about the full ritual: washing the bowl, smelling the aroma of the powder, hearing the gentle whisking. Every step was performed with intention, cultivating awareness and presence. A philosophy that inspires everything we do at kōdō.

Sourcing our tea

We carefully source our tea through an exclusive partnership with a single, family-run farm in Uji, Kyoto, where the art of tencha has been practiced for over 400 years. Using hand-picked top leaves and traditional cultivation methods, the farm creates teas of exceptional quality and authenticity, a practice that is now increasingly rare.

Through this connection, we bring a piece of Japan and the essence of nature to your cup, offering an experience that honors centuries of tradition, craftsmanship, and mindful enjoyment in every sip.
